The field elm (Ulmus minor) is widespread in continental Europe, Asia, the Mediterranean and North America. Its natural habitat is represented by forests and fallow land. It shows good tolerance to cold and drought and normally grows at altitudes between 0 and 1200 meters. It's an average size tree and can reach 30 meters in height. For several decades, it has been threatened by a fungal disease, the Dutch Elm Disease, which is decimating the older specimens.
