The Oil palm (Elaeis guineensis) is native to a vast area of Africa between Gambia and Angola. It can reach 30 meters in height and produces fruits grouped into very large compact spherical clusters containing up to 2000 fruits each. Today it is widely cultivated in vast tropical areas and in the Americas and Southeast Asia. It is grown mainly for the production of palm oil which is extracted from its fruits.
